The short version.
Fertally is a clinical software platform in fertility care, going through EU MDR Class IIa conformity assessment as software as a medical device. We are preparing to launch our pilot clinic trials this year. We need a Technical Lead to take over the codebase, the release discipline and the engineering culture from the founder, who has built it to this point.
This is a ground-floor role in something that is about to grow. The salary is nominal until our next round of funding, and we would rather say that plainly than dress it up.
There is a salary. It is not yet the salary the role deserves.
If you want to be the person who took a medical device from pre-CE to CE Mark and beyond, and to own that outcome from the start, this is something you might want to read.
What you would be joining.
Fertally is a full web application, also shipped as a native app, built as a clinical platform for patients and their clinicians. It is EU-hosted, and data sovereignty is a founding principle for us, not a feature. It is built under a Class IIa quality system from day one, and it already has real users and real clinics.
We are a small team of founders: a CEO who is technical and built the platform to this point, a COO, and a Clinical Lead, with a set of advisors around us. Pre-seed funding from Enterprise Ireland is secured.
What you will own.
This is a hands-on role. You will write code most days. You will also be the person the rest of the company relies on for every technical decision.
Release and quality
- Own the deploy pipeline, the checks that run on every release, and the rule that nothing that is live ever regresses
- Own the test strategy, including the gaps we already know about
- Turn the current founder-led release discipline into something a team can run without her
Regulatory engineering
- Work with the team regularly, and with third-party contractors as necessary, on software lifecycle evidence, quality system records, risk files and data-protection assessments
- Understand that Class IIa, GDPR and EU-only hosting are not trade-offs. They are constraints that never move.
The team
- Help hire and lead the first engineers after you
- Set the standards: quality, scalability and security considered in every piece of work, from the first line
- Be intrinsic to building the robust architecture Fertally runs on
What we are looking for.
You do not need to tick every box. You do need to be honest about which ones you tick.
Must have
- Three or more years building and shipping production software, with at least two years leading the technical direction of a product or team
- Full-stack competent: comfortable owning both backend and frontend work end to end, not specialised in only one
- Real production experience with relational databases, including migrations on live data
- Cloud infrastructure ownership: services, databases, access control, secrets, logging
- A deep understanding of machine learning and predictive algorithms. This matters a great deal to us: the intelligence in the platform is the product
- Creative use of programming. You adapt code to what the product actually needs, think outside the box, and are not limited to what you learned in college
- Comfortable working with AI coding assistants as part of how you build. We use them a lot, under strict review
- A track record of fixing the root cause rather than the symptom, and of saying "I don't know yet" when that is the truth
- You care about moving fertility care and women's health forward through your work. The people using this platform are in some of the hardest moments of their lives, and that has to matter to you
- Eligible to work in Ireland
Strongly preferred
- Experience in a regulated environment: medical devices, health data, fintech, or anything with an auditor
- Mobile experience shipping a web application as a native app
- GDPR literacy at the engineering level: data partitioning, right of access and erasure, consent scoping
Not required, but nice
- An interest in fertility or women's health
- We will teach you the domain. Curiosity and respect for the patients whose data you are handling are required.
How we work.
- The founder is currently the technical lead and has built the platform with AI coding assistants under strict review. You will inherit both the codebase and that way of working, and you will be expected to make it better.
- No invented bugs, no silent queueing of work, no "it's deployed" when it is only merged.
- Patient surfaces are emotional space. We never streak-shame, never use urgency tactics, and never imply the algorithm knows better than the person logging their own body.
Compensation.
What this leads to.
You would be the first technical hire in a medtech company at the moment it moves from build to clinic. When Fertally succeeds, you will have been the engineer who carried a Class IIa device through CE Mark, built the team around it, and set the standard for how the platform was made. Those are not things you can add to a CV by joining later.
Apply.
Send your CV, a short note and a link to something you have built or led. Then answer one question in under 250 words: what is one feature Fertally does not have that you think it needs, and how would you build it? No cover letter, no template.
Applications close on 1 October 2026. We will reply to everyone who applies.
Application received.
Thank you. It has gone straight to the founder, and we reply to everyone who applies.
